A Window of Whimsy

Bria Luepke is holding steady a small, bright red glass in one hand and a soldering iron in the other. She’s designed a new piece of stained glass window art—a flower—and the red glass is about to become a petal. With a slow hand, Bria solders the glass into place, fitted perfectly to the petals around it.

“I actually fell in love with stained glass art in a sculpture class,” Bria says, the flower finished on the table behind her. Bria is a student at Hamline University, minoring in art. “We had a guest teacher who introduced the form and I couldn’t wait to get more pieces of glass and start putting them together.” She designs her own pieces, be they dinosaurs, gnomes, or florals.

A first-time vendor at the Starbuck Vintage & Artisan Market, Bria will be bringing stained glass pieces perfect for hanging in a window. She’ll also have white-burn candles, made in a cold water process. “As you pour layers of wax over the wick,” Bria explains, “You simultaneously dip the wick and flowing wax into a bucket of cold water.” The process creates a unique shape each time—as individual as a snowflake.

Bria will also have small clay figurines alongside her colorful candles and translucent stained glass pieces. You can visit her booth at the 4th Annual Starbuck Vintage & Artisan Market on the shores of Lake Minnewaska in Starbuck’s City Park. Find artisans, vintage merchants, and food vendors on Friday, August 1st from 4-8 PM and Saturday, August 2nd from 9 AM-4 PM with the Lake Minnewaska Classic Car Show on Saturday from 10 AM-2 PM.
