Wellbeing and Wellness: Through the Senses

In the woods just north of Starbuck, Julie Otto is preparing her next batch of homemade bug spray. You've probably seen a wide variety of natural scents used through the years to deter bugs. For mosquitos, you can use citronella, lemon eucalyptus, peppermint, catnip basil—even clove, thyme, lemongrass, and lavender. As you can imagine, Julie’s blends smell fantastic.

Julie’s “Bye Bye Bugs” is a proprietary blend that leads with cinnamon and includes 9 oils and herbs. She mixes her bug spray and other essential oils products from her home, just north of Starbuck. There, Julie operates In the Woods Remedies, and her booth in Starbuck will include a variety of essential oil products, whipped tallow balms, and new this year—air diffusers with fruit, coconut, and essential oil blends. You can find Julie on her In the Woods Remedies Facebook page.

Stop by Julie’s booth at the 4th Annual Starbuck Vintage & Artisan Market, held on the shores of Lake Minnewaska in Starbuck’s City Park. Find artisans, vintage merchants, and food vendors on Friday, August 1st from 4-8 PM and Saturday, August 2nd from 9 AM-4 PM with the Lake Minnewaska Classic Car Show on Saturday from 10 AM-2 PM.
