Squishy or Structured Play
Danita Newman and her daughter, designer Miss Lu, are bringing their New Mischief Creations to the Starbuck Vintage & Artisan Market for their fourth year. You’ll find many delights in their booth, including a charming array of fully-articulated playthings—3D printed dragons, turtles, slugs, butterflies, and octopi, to name a few. Each animal creation is made of moving parts: arms that wiggle, necks that turn, backs that bend. While most of their creations have been composed of hard plastic, the team has ventured into squishy items this year. “The squishy ones still have moving parts,” says Danita, “but of course they’re a nice soft texture for a unique sensory experience.”
New pieces are constantly taking shape on a 3D printer before finding new homes with happy children, toy collectors, and printing enthusiasts enamored by their designs. New Mischief Creations uses a plant-based plastic for their playthings. "The plastic is quite durable but biodegradable, making the products we're creating easier on the environment," says Danita.
“We’ll have paints and blanks again this year,” says Danita. She’s referring to playthings printed without colors; she’ll hand paint pieces as requested and encourage children to paint their new creations with brushes and paints provided. The team will also have their claw machine filled with small pieces, perfect for kids and grandkids coming to the market. The Benson artisan can be found on their website and on Facebook as New Mischief Creations and Miss Lu’s designs are also available for purchase or commission.
